Focus: Creating believable, cohesive characters and story ideas
-Fun Framing/Filling the Frame
-Prioritizing Image Moments
-Moving the Reader's Eye
-Studio Week*- Finish "Seeing Uranus", thumbnail your graphic novel testing the best layouts
Story Sketchers helps talented illustrators hone their skills to tell understandable visual stories that leave an impression on their audience. Visual communication is an important skill to have in many areas of life.
Classes are weekly during the school year:
Thursdays at 6:00-7:15PM or Fridays at 11:45AM-12:45PM EST
Suggested ages: 12-18 with established drawing skills coming in to class. Step-by-step students will follow along with a template. Independents will create their own templates or choose from pre-drawn templates we offer.
Draw a 4-page graphic story every month, focusing on higher level layout and drawing techniques! Or get coaching on your own independent graphic story project (one or two semesters or the whole year)! If you're looking for an ongoing drawing community for your comic book artist, manga maven or graphic novelist, you're in the right place! Come join us! Wherever you are, we want you in the Club! Group pricing if you meet together with 10 or more (see pricing below).
Draw Club sessions are grouped in simple four-week themes...character/story development, layout and pacing, camera angles and flow, light and dark balance, etc. Classes run for 1h15min on Thursdays or 1 hour on Fridays (all independent graphic novelists join us Thursday evening), and cover a new basic drawing subject/style every week.
CLASS STRUCTURE:
-5 minutes progress reporting
-5 minutes lesson focus, history and examples
-45 minutes step-by-step drawing (10 minutes on, 2 minute break repeated) (independents work on their own stories throughout class)
-20 minutes sharing and discussion with step-by-step illustrators and independents
HOW IT WORKS: Three sessions (per 4-week-theme) are live, step-by-step tutorials. And because students like time to develop their own style, 1 session per month is recorded. The fourth, recorded session is called Studio Time week. The Studio Time video is posted on YouTube, and gives students freedom to apply techniques they've learned and explore the end of the story on their own. There is also a step-by-step page drawing in the Studio Time video if you want or need extra help applying your skills (or just want to finish it the way we do). Independents will be given "one-up" challenges during Studio Time week to grow their storytelling tools and expertise.
Attendees are sent a Zoom invite (new each week) to join the live Draw Club session and JPG files to print to follow along on the lesson. Please provide an email address you check regularly during check out so you are sure to receive both the invite and the JPG files
For these sessions, you will need:
•A computer/iPad/monitor that can display the live Zoom session & Studio Week video.
•The JPG(s) you receive for the sessions printed before the session starts.
•A pencil and an eraser.
•A pen (or preferably two) with indelible ink. One fine tip, and if possible, a second with a bit larger tip to fill in more area (which makes things quicker).
•Colored pencils, markers, or crayons...preferably with 2-3 of each color (ie. light green, medium green, dark green). Simple, low cost colors will work fine.
If you miss a class or classes, they will be posted as private videos on YouTube for 2 weeks following the session, so you can always catch up on your own time.
There will be other students and groups in attendance, and feeds will be muted during the step-by-step portion of the class, with small breaks for questions. Chat will be moderated if you have any questions while muted.
Photo Waiver: Draw Club takes weekly pictures of student artwork and shares some of them in the email update and on social media for people to see what awesome artists we have in Draw Club.
